So this is a page with stuff to download, its on my own webspace, so don't rape the shit out of it!

I don't own the rights to any of this stuff, if it needs to come down contact me via my bands forum

all files are offered in .mp3 format, encoded with CD.EX at variable bitrate 192 - 256kbps (unless otherwise stated).
All those annoying tags should all be in order too, each set of recordings is set up as though it is an album.

If you have any of these in better quality, then obviously it would be nice to replace the files that are here, some of these date from the days of tape trading, so there could well be better versions out there...rather annoyingly I have found that some of my CDR's are screwed and erroring all over the place because they are so old (and low quality branded!)....what a bummer.

Rare and unreleased studio recordings

Big Bang Theory (quality 4.5/5)- Whilst not strictly a studio out - take, its never been on CD, and I paid £20 or so for the 7" back in 97 or so, so I Think it's Fair to say its near impossible to get...hopefully one day it will be out on CD,....
The track is the B-side to the mike watt single "E ticket ride" (album version if you were wondering) and features FB on vox, and J mascis on guitar...wow my two favourite musicians on 1 song.

Billy Radcliffe - Alternate Vocal Version lifted from the pistolero master DAT - yes that's a 5 out of 5 for sound quality!
Living On Soul - Alternate take lifted from the pistolero master DAT

Acoustic Versions of frank songs taken from various places.

List Royale -
This list will be the best version I can find of every frank track done in acoustic form, some will be extracted from radio sessions, and some from live acoustic shows. The aim is to make it as complete as possible! - as you can see I never got very far with this!

Radio and TV interviews, audio only

Aug 13 1994, Short interview lifted from a westwood one promo CD, featuring the show "Out of order, with Jed the Fish" I paid way more than I should have for this thing, and this is all I got????

Compilation Appearances
These songs aren't for download, but frankblack.net doesn't feature a section in its discography listing appearances of frank on other records, so I thought I'd compile a list here, Simply put I have nearly missed some of these things, and know I have probably missed some others, so here are those I know of...Most of these are available from the amazon...so if you are missing one, go buy it! The scores are there just to warn you away from a couple of things, but on the whole I'd say buy all of the things on this page!

The Adventure Club Sessions -
* Old Black Dawning (acoustic)
*
Czar (acoustic)

Both these tracks are the same version s that feature on the "conversation and music" promo, however they don't feature that DJ guy talking over them

Tribute To Arthur Alexander -
* Old John Amos
* Go Home Girl (with Gary US Bonds)

These are a bit weird, the music is performed by some sort of house band for the tribute album, despite my initial skepticism I ended up really liking both these songs a lot!

Brace Yourself: A Tribute to Otis Blackwell -
* Breathless
* Handyman

In the same series as the Arthur Alexander tribute (as if the terrible cover art didn't give that away!) Handyman is way better than Breathless...both are still pretty good though

6.5 out of 10

Mike Watt: Ball-Hog Or TugBoat? -
* Chinese Firedrill

One of those songs which seems to have an awkward time signature, but doesn't, its a cool song, but the whole record has this odd overtone, and a terrible bass sound!

6.5 out of 10

Mike Watt: E Ticket Ride 7"
* Big Bang Theory

It's up at the top of the page, go download it. Excuse the low quality image, I might actually scan it on one day...

Gilby Clarke: Pawnshop Guitars -
* Jail Guitar Doors (Clash Cover)

Frank does backing vocals on this, and I think he plays rhythm guitar, you can just about make him out on the chorus, so not essential, however, it's a good cover!

Reeves Gabrels: The Sacred Squall Of Now -
*119 Years ago

Great song, sounds like it could have almost been a frank track, I Think this was recorded at the same time as the one from Reeves' second record, seeing as NME reported on a collaboration between Bowie Frank and Grohl long before this was released...

Inch: Chicharrones promo EP -
* Chicharrones

OK now it is widely reported that frank appears on the album version of this track, as far as I can tell this isn't the case. I managed to pick up a promo 1 track CD featuring a frank black remix of the track, (the sleeve lists it as a two track single, however, there is only one track on the disc), I have the album as well, and the two versions are different, the one on the single features some vocal harmonies that sound like Frank. I have never seen this anywhere again, so it's pretty darn rare! but don't fret, because it's not all that good.

5.5 out of 10

Piss and Vinegar, Songs of Graham Parker -
* Local Girls

God this is shit beyond shit, John Tiven sings away on this limp insipid piece of turd, + you certainly can't hear frank, not that even that could have saved this piece of turdtastic crappolla.

Songs in the Key of X -
* Man Of Steel

Pretty good song, also available on the Oddballs CD. The mix here is slightly different, I'd say its fuller and better than the one featured on oddballs, however the difference is fairly subtle. If you are unsure about this mix business check out the final ring out on each version, you'll notice they are different (on this version frank carries on playing for a bit, on the oddballs version he stops and the organ carries on for a second or so)

Superbad @ 65 A Tribute to James Brown -
* Mother Popcorn

Frank screams like james brown, This is ace, I ripped it off and wrote a song that sounded like James Brown for my band after hearing this!
When seeking the artwork I saw that it has a current asking price of £3 used on amazon!

7 out 10

The Wallflowers: Breach (EP)
* Letters From The Wasteland

This is pretty dull AOR crap. it's almost good like the Wannadies, but really it just ends up sounding like Crowded House! Frank does backing vocals, I can't hear him anywhere, oh and did I mention that and it's crap? oh...I did!

Crime And Punishment in Suburbia -
* Bullet

I have found this in trading circles being called the pre DIT's Bullet Demo, no it isn't its a weird instrumental version from this weird but probably not very good film (i haven't seen it, I just wanted to write something the read well!). So its an instrumental with some psyche out noodling, and one alternate riff at the end...It's OK but more of a curiosity than anything else.

Gordon Gano: Hitting The Ground -
* Run

Now I expected this to be good, but it's really not, The song is passable, but it's in some sort of key that frank seems unhappy to be singing in! it has no real riffs either, lots of it is just one chord being held for ages...PJ Harvey sings a song on this record too, which is also a bit crap.

Delicatessen 4 -
* End Of Miles (Acoustic)

Frank and an acoustic guitar, accompanied by some electric lead, this is an excellent version of an excellent song! but for some reason it fades out halfway through??? it would be getting a 9 but the fade out cost it!

7 out of 10

Reeves Gabrels: Ulysses -
* Jewel

A superstar sing fest, Frank / Dave Grohl / Bowie, and its pretty good, although frank sounds like he is doing his bowie impersonation on it!

8 out of 10

Heroes & Villains, The Powerpuff Girls Soundtrack -
* Pray For the Girls

This is also on the download only compilation "One More Road For The Hit" If like me you want to own a real record instead of an MP3 then get this, otherwise get the download one, they are both the same mix, and this version features some crazy annoying crap from the film at the end, however, it also features one of the greatest Devo songs ever recorded. The song itself is a rocking MF

8.5 out of 10

Wig In A Box -
* Sugar Daddy

This is an entertaining song, that's all there is to it really. You aren't going to think its amazing as its not all that serious, but its still cool.

7.5 out of 10

PF Sloan: Sailover -
* Eve Of Destruction (with Buddy Miller)
* Halloween Mary

I haven't listened to this very much, the version of eve of destruction wasnt very good, but I seem to remember liking Halloween Mary

7 out of 10 (although I can't be sure!)

Seen Unseen -
* ???

I can't remember what was on this, I have it on order, but it may never come (it was an SSMVGD song)

Hello Radio: The Songs Of They Might Be Giants -

It;s a bit average, but I have only listened to it a couple of times, maybe it's a grower.

(5 out of 10)

High School Reunion -
* Repo Man (Iggy Pop cover)

This isnt really particularly great, its an ambient synth thing, with the lyrics spoken over the top, perhaps it was inspired by william shtners mr tamourine man...maybe. it's a shame the original kicks ass.
